Be honest…do you have ALL your holiday gifts purchased and ready to go? Did you find something thoughtful and meaningful for each person you gifted?
I’m still waiting on a couple packages to arrive (hopefully) in the next 48 hours before I head home for the holidays, but I think I did pretty well finding meaningful gifts this year.
Obviously I can’t reveal what they are yet because most of my friends and family read the blog, and I don’t want to ruin the surprise, but trust me…they’re pretty good. Get excited, fam.
You know what makes them great gifts, though? They aren’t expensive or over-the-top or No. 1 on the top gift guides this year…they’re just things I know each person will enjoy. And some of them aren’t things. They’re experiences.
The key to the perfect gift experience is knowing the person you’re gifting. Think about what they like to do, where they like to go, where they’ve dreamt about going and who they’d like to go with. Then, give them the tools to get there!
One of the gifts I’ve been most proud of over the past couple years has been a pair of tickets for my parents to go see the Long Island Medium on her tour. Although it makes me LOL to type that sentence, it’s true. Here’s what happened…
When Theresa Caputo first became popular a couple years ago, my parents got really into her show. My employer does business with a lot of the event venues in Pittsburgh, so they’re able to offer special ticket rates for us, and it just so happened that Theresa was scheduled to do a show in the area a few weeks after Christmas. When I saw the email about the tickets, I immediately thought about my parents and their obsession with the show, and I thought, “That would make a great gift!”. So, I ordered the tickets a couple days before Christmas, made a little coupon voucher with Theresa’s picture that said “This voucher good for two tickets to see the Long Island Medium on January 23rd” (or whenever it was) and stuck it in a Christmas card.
When I handed my mom the card on Christmas morning, she was SO excited. It was definitely the best reaction I’ve ever gotten from giving someone a gift, and she couldn’t wait to show my dad and the rest of the family all day long. All that and there wasn’t even an object that she could play with and show off that day?! #Perfection.
Why? Because I kept the recipients on my mind, and when I came across the perfect gift, I knew it when I saw it. It’s MUCH easier than waiting till the last minute and trying to remember everything the recipient mentioned over the past year. It’s also much easier to gift an experience to a couple or a family rather than trying to find some sort of object everyone will like.
Here are some different types of tickets and experiences that could work for pretty much anyone who enjoys living:
- Tickets to a concert or show
- Tickets to a sporting event
- Tickets to a museum or tourist attraction they’ve always wanted to visit but never actually did
- Reservations at a winery or brewery tour
- Gift card to their favorite restaurant
- Activity vouchers to try a new experience at a destination you know they’re visiting soon
- Hotel voucher and/or transportation voucher for a weekend getaway
- Airline tickets to visit their family in another part of the country or world
- Airline tickets for another visit to spend more time with YOU since it was so nice to get together at Christmas
Think about WHO they’d like to go with and you’ll think of even more experiences:
- An experience with you, the gift giver
- An experience with their partner
- An experience with their family
- A solo experience for some much needed ME time
The options are seriously endless, and you’ll think of so many more once you really get in the head of your recipient. This type of gift is perfect for procrastinators, too since you don’t necessarily need to hand them the tickets to their experience on Christmas Day. Must easier than running to the store the last week before Christmas!
If it’s a gift card, you can easily pick that up between now and Christmas, or depending on the experience, you may be able to download the tickets and print them yourself.
If there are no physical tickets involved or if you won’t have the tickets in time for Christmas, grab my experience voucher below and fill in some details for your recipient. It’s sized to fit inside most standard greeting cards, so you can print it out, fill it out, seal it up and send or hand it to your recipient on the big day. Then, sit back and get ready to watch their face light up when they open it. #BestGiftEver

The best part of gifting experiences? You don’t have to wrap anything! Ain’t nobody got time for that.
